When does hazard tree removal become the right call?

Hazard tree removal is based on the risk of the tree failing. The problem may be in the roots or trunk. If something valuable is nearby then you can see why it would be considered a hazard.

When people ask how do you know if a tree needs removing they are typically looking at three things. Where is the defect? If it is in the branches then this can often be cut out but if it is in the trunk or roots then it will usually need cutting down. What is the tree near to? A house, driveway or power line. Third, whether the problem is getting worse, like a lean that's new this season.

On the plateau, big Douglas firs with root disease are a common example. Our storm risk trimming guide explains how those trees fail and why trimming can't fix them.

Sammamish adds its own rule for hazard trees. The City requires a TRAQ-qualified arborist's risk assessment, which our Sammamish tree removal guide covers in detail. So, if you're looking for hazard tree removal Sammamish WA, ask about that assessment first.

What drives tree removal cost on a Sammamish lot?

Mainly accessibility and risk. The cost of removing a tree will vary depending on how difficult the tree was to remove without causing damage.

So, how much does tree removal cost? Here's what moves the number up or down:

Cost driver

Why it matters

What it means for your quote

Height and trunk size

Bigger trees mean more cuts and more wood

More crew time and disposal

Drop zone

Open space lets a tree be felled in one piece

No drop zone means a slower sectional takedown

What's underneath

Houses, fences, sheds and power lines

More rigging and lowering

Access

Narrow side yards and slopes limit equipment

Some pieces must be carried out by hand

Wood handling

Hauling away, chipping or cutting firewood

Each option is priced differently

Stump

Grinding is a separate step

Often a separate line item

Permits

Sammamish requires permits and replacement trees for many removals

Paperwork and a new tree to plant

That last row matters on the plateau. The City of Sammamish's tree permitting page explains when a permit is needed and the replacement planting rules. By budgeting for your new tree you can avoid any surprises.

Compare the quotes you have received to make sure they are all quoting for the same things. A low price quote that doesn't include things like clearing up or stump removal is often not the best value for money.

What happens on removal day?

The crew sets up, protects the area, takes the tree down in a planned order and cleans up before leaving. Here's how a typical day runs:

  • Site setup, including marking the drop zone and protecting lawns and paths

  • Limb removal, usually working from the bottom up

  • Takedown, either felling in one piece or lowering sections on ropes

  • Ground work, where limbs are chipped and the trunk is cut to length

  • Cleanup, raking, blowing and hauling debris as agreed

There are weather factors too. The more windy it is the less predictable the rigging, so we might schedule it around a quieter day if you want to clear a house. It is also handy to let your neighbours know. A large takedown will cause some noise, someone smiling in the street and sometimes temporarily moving cars.

Large conifers close to houses take the most time. For a closer look at how big trees come down in tight spaces, see our large tree removal guide.

Does stump grinding come with the removal?

Not necessarily. It might help to check your quote. Stump grinding is often an additional service and many homeowners decide whether they want this once the tree has been removed.

Once the stump has been removed you have 3 options. You can leave it, which costs nothing but leaves a trip hazard and can attract insects as it rots. You can grind it below the surface, which is the most common option. Or you can have the stump and main roots fully removed, which is more work and more disruption.

The grinding will reduce the stump into wood chips. This is generally done a few inches below ground level. The deeper roots will remain within the soil, however this will decompose over time. This is why normally the best option is to replant slightly off centre of where the original stump was.

Because grinding disturbs soil below the surface, utility lines matter. Washington's dig law requires a utility locate before digging, and the Utilities and Transportation Commission's call-before-you-dig page explains that the request goes in at least two business days ahead. A good crew builds that into the schedule. Our guide to stump grinding versus stump removal compares the two in more depth.

Frequently asked questions

1. What does removing a large tree cost in Sammamish?

The price varies depending on the size of tree, what is around it, and the amount of rope work required. Removing a large fir tree from an open area will obviously be much less than one growing next to a house. Additional costs can occur due to permits, replanting and stump grinding. We can provide you with a free written quotation after viewing the tree.

2. How do you know a tree needs removing rather than pruning?

If the issue is with the branches we can often prune the tree. If however there is a weakness with the trunk or roots, or the tree is dying it is generally safest to remove the tree. Trees that are too close to the house to fall safely may also need to be removed.

3. Is the stump included, or is grinding priced separately?

Usually it's priced separately, so you can decide whether you want it. We list stump grinding as its own line item on the quote. Many homeowners add it at the same visit, since the crew and equipment are already on site.

4. How is a big conifer taken down safely between two houses?

We remove them in pieces. We climb up and remove the limbs, then cut the trunk into pieces and lower them via rope. The ground team have control of the pieces to ensure they do not hit any roofs, fences or landscaped areas.

5. What happens with the wood and the debris afterwards?

Limbs and small branches are generally chippped on site. The trunk can be taken away or cut into firewood lengths and left for you. Please let us know what you would like done with it before we start and we will factor this into our quotation.

6. Can you remove a tree without damaging my lawn and landscaping?

In most cases, yes. Protecting lawns and paths, and lowering heavy pieces instead of dropping them, keeps damage to a minimum. Some marks from foot traffic or equipment are normal, but they usually recover quickly.

7. Will removing one tree make nearby trees less stable?

Sometimes. Trees that grew up sheltered by a neighbor can face more wind once it's gone. We check the remaining trees during the estimate and point out any that deserve a closer look.

8. How long does a tree removal job take?

A single medium tree in an open yard often takes a few hours. A large conifer between houses can take a full day or more. Stump grinding usually adds an hour or two per stump.
